Things to do with kids in Alice Springs

Give the Alice Springs Desert Park most of a morning. Easy trails wind through desert habitats, and the free-flying birds of prey in the Nature Theatre are the part kids talk about afterwards. It opens at 7.30am, so go early, before the heat builds.
Back in town, the Reptile Centre is a short walk from Todd Mall, and the keepers bring out lizards and snakes a few times a day. The Royal Flying Doctor Service base is worth an hour too: kids can climb into a replica plane and meet founder John Flynn as a life-size hologram.
For a picnic, head 4 kilometres north to the old Telegraph Station, with gum trees, a cafe and bikes to hire. End the day on Anzac Hill, which you can drive up, and watch the sun go down over the town and the MacDonnell Ranges.
