Camping in Bundaberg

Bundaberg is known nationally for its turtles. Just north of Bargara, Mon Repos has the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the east coast of the Australian mainland, loggerheads, flatbacks, greens and the odd leatherback among them. Inland, the Burnett River winds past citrus towns to the sandstone cliffs of Cania Gorge.

Where is the best place to camp in Bundaberg?

The choice is the beach or the gorge country. On the coast, Bargara, Burnett Heads and Elliott Heads are 13 to 18 km from the city, and several parks there, such as Bargara Beach Caravan Park, are a short walk from the beach. Inland, BIG4 Breeze Cania Gorge sits in the gorge north of Monto, a good base for the national park's short walks, and the citrus towns of Gayndah and Mundubbera on the Burnett River each have a caravan park.

What is there to do in Bundaberg with kids?

The turtles are the highlight: they come ashore after dark from mid-November to February, and the hatchlings head for the water from mid-January to late March, with Queensland Parks rangers running guided tours each night in season. On the coast, Bargara and Kellys beaches are good for swimming and fishing, and Elliott Heads has a surf beach plus calmer water on the river side for paddleboarding. In Bundaberg, Alexandra Park Zoo is by the river, and in North Bundaberg, the Hinkler Hall of Aviation is next to Bert Hinkler's house. South towards Childers, Snakes Downunder is a reptile park and zoo.
