Family-run for over 33 years, Skeetas looks over the Batavia Coast Marina to the ocean. Fresh local seafood and steak lead the menu. Friday is cocktail night, so time dinner with the sunset.

Geraldton's only rooftop bar sits on level three of The Gerald, with 270-degree views from the Moresby Ranges to the port. Order a Gage Roads beer or a cocktail for the sunset. Then head downstairs to Bob's Boutique Bar, which pours more than 70 gins.

A tasting paddle at Batavia Brewing
Geraldton's first microbrewery began in a shed and still brews on Fitzgerald Street. Work through a paddle, from a Helles-style lager to a stout named for Abrolhos legends. The chilli ginger beer has a proper kick.

Finlay's is an open-air restaurant a couple of blocks from Kalbarri's beach, with its own craft brewery out the back. The menu leans on local seafood. Sundays bring live music from 4pm, and tables book out.

On Mount Scott above the city, this national memorial honours the 645 men lost when HMAS Sydney II sank in November 1941. Volunteer guides explain its five symbolic parts and read from the Wall of Remembrance. Go early, when the hilltop is quiet.

Step out over the gorge on the Kalbarri Skywalk
Two cantilevered platforms hang 100 metres above the Murchison River gorge in Kalbarri National Park. The red-banded rock and river views are worth the drive from Geraldton. Signs tell the Nanda people's story, and the Skywalk Café is next door.

Midday colour at Hutt Lagoon, the Pink Lake
Algae that make beta-carotene turn Hutt Lagoon bubblegum pink, sometimes red or lilac. It sits beside the fishing village of Port Gregory, just over an hour north of Geraldton. Pull in at the lookout on Port Gregory Road.

Dutch shipwrecks at the Museum of Geraldton
The Shipwrecks Gallery holds treasures raised from four Dutch wrecks, the Batavia among them. A short 3D film then takes you 2,500 metres down to where HMAS Sydney and the Kormoran lie today. The museum looks straight out over the Indian Ocean.

A movie under the stars at the Dongara Denison Drive In
Built in 1967, this heritage-listed drive-in is one of only four still running in WA. Park up with a burger from the kiosk and watch a new release or a classic.

Fly to the Abrolhos and snorkel off East Wallabi
Shine Aviation flies you over fishing settlements and three island groups of the Houtman Abrolhos, 60km offshore. You land on East Wallabi and walk to Turtle Bay. Then snorkel the coral, swim, or follow the island's nature trail.
