Things to do with kids in Adelaide Hills

The Adelaide Hills start about twenty minutes from the city, and most of the best family days up here involve animals. At Cleland Wildlife Park the kangaroos roam open bushland, and a bag of food from the gate brings them straight to you. Further north at Cudlee Creek, Gorge Wildlife Park is smaller and family-run, with koala sessions twice a day.
In Gumeracha, kids can climb to the top of the Big Rocking Horse, then feed the goats and alpacas next door and play a round of mini golf. Birdwood's National Motor Museum is a few minutes up the road, with trail sheets that send younger kids hunting through more than 300 vehicles.
For the view, drive up to Mount Lofty Summit, where the city stretches out to the sea, or walk the flat loop around the lake at Mount Lofty Botanic Garden nearby. From March to November, the Highlander steam train runs from Mount Barker to Strathalbyn on most Sundays.

Top things to do in Adelaide Hills

Cleland Wildlife Park
Hand-feed kangaroos at Cleland
Most of Cleland's animals live in open bushland rather than cages. A small bag of food from the gate lets kids feed kangaroos, wallabies and potoroos. Bird flu precautions have closed some aviaries and paused bird feeding, and a family day pass was $94 in October 2026.

Gorge Wildlife Park
Pat a koala at Gorge Wildlife Park
Koala sessions at this family-run park in Cudlee Creek run daily at 11.30am and 2.30pm, for an extra fee. On days forecast to reach 32 degrees, only koala close-ups run and there is no holding. Kids can also feed the kangaroos and see meerkats, otters and alligators, and family entry was $72 in October 2026.

Mount Lofty Botanic Garden, Crafers
Loop the lake at Mount Lofty Botanic Garden
From the lower car park, a flat sealed trail circles the main lake for 1km past a series of sculptures. The rest of the garden is steep in the gullies, which is hard going with a pram. Parking is paid by card only, and bikes, scooters and dogs aren't allowed inside.

Giant's Cave
Find Giant's Cave in Morialta Gorge
The First Falls walk follows a creek through Morialta Gorge, takes prams, and is a good place to count koalas. A detour of 89 steps leads to Giant's Cave, big enough for several people to sit in the cool and look over the gorge. Near the Stradbroke Road car park, the Mukanthi playspace has giant nests to climb and a secret tunnel.

Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary, Mylor
Look for a platypus at Warrawong
Warrawong says it is the only place on mainland South Australia where you may see the shy platypus. Koalas, kangaroos, bandicoots and bettongs live safe behind its feral-proof fence, along with more than 100 bird species. Day entry is open on weekends and school and public holidays, and a guided 90-minute dusk tour gives the best chance of a platypus.
