Things to do with kids in Broome & Australia's North West

Broome is the easiest base. Ride a camel along Cable Beach at sunset, then catch a film from the deckchairs at Sun Pictures, the world's oldest working outdoor cinema, where a plane now and then roars overhead. Saltwater crocodiles are sometimes seen off Broome, so treat the beaches as places to walk and play rather than swim.
At very low tide, real dinosaur footprints show at Gantheaume Point, and a cast sits on the track for the rest of the time. Out of town, Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park has some of the biggest crocodiles on display in Australia, with a feeding tour at 3pm.
The rest of the region is a long way from anywhere and best visited in the dry season. In Karijini, a stairway drops into Dales Gorge for a swim below Fortescue Falls. Up in the Kimberley, freshwater crocs bask in the pools at Windjana Gorge, and the Bungle Bungles can only be reached by high-clearance 4WD.

Top things to do in Broome & the NW

Cable Beach
Ride a camel along Cable Beach
Cable Beach runs for 22km, and several operators run camel rides on the sand, including at sunset. Flatback turtles nest here from October to March. Saltwater crocodiles are sometimes seen off Broome, and the Shire has closed its beaches to swimming after sightings, so make this a sand-and-camels outing.

Watch the 3pm feed at Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park
The park is 16km from Broome on the Broome Highway and opens 2pm to 5pm daily, or weekends only in February. The crocodile feeding tour starts at 3pm, and the park holds some of the largest crocodiles on display in Australia. A family ticket for two adults and two kids aged 5 to 15 was $140 in October 2026.

Sun Pictures, Broome
Watch a movie under the stars at Sun Pictures
Sun Pictures opened in 1916 and is recognised as the world's oldest operating picture garden. You watch from deckchairs under the open sky, and now and then a plane roars overhead. There are two screenings a day, so pick the early one for younger kids.

Gantheaume Point
Hunt for dinosaur footprints at Gantheaume Point
Red cliffs drop to the sea at Gantheaume Point, about 9km from town. The real dinosaur footprints, more than 130 million years old, show only at very low tide, and the rocks below are very slippery. A cast of the footprints sits up on the track, and lifeguards don't patrol this point.

Town Beach
Catch the Staircase to the Moon at Town Beach
From March to October, the rising full moon reflects off the tidal flats on two or three nights a month. The last 2026 nights are 27 to 29 October, and the water park beside the beach opens 8.30am to 5pm except Tuesdays. Saltwater crocodiles are occasionally seen, and the Shire closes the beach after a sighting or sting.

Fortescue Falls
Swim below Fortescue Falls in Karijini
A short path leads to a lookout, then a stairway with handrails drops into Dales Gorge to the falls. You can swim at Fortescue Falls and at Fern Pool, 300m away, where the Banjima people ask for quiet voices and no jumping. The pools are very cold from April to September, and park entry is $17 per vehicle.

Hamersley Gorge
See the folded rock walls of Hamersley Gorge
Coloured rock layers bend and fold down the walls of this gorge, about 90 minutes' drive from Tom Price. A new lookout is a short walk from the car park, and steep, rough steps lead 400m down to a swimming pool. Flash floods can occur, so stay out of the gorge when there is rain in the area.

Windjana Gorge Walk
Spot freshwater crocs at Windjana Gorge
The Gorge Walk is 1.9km return, and you can see fossils of ancient sea life in the limestone walls. Freshwater crocodiles bask in the pools, so leave the swimmers in the car. The park opens in the dry season, from May to November, and closes when wet-season rain cuts the roads.

Cathedral Gorge
Walk into Cathedral Gorge in the Bungle Bungles
A moderately difficult 2km return trail leads into this natural amphitheatre of red rock in Purnululu National Park. The park opens from about April or May until late November, and only high-clearance 4WDs can reach it. Heat can top 40°C, so carry a litre of water per person for every hour of walking.

Lake Argyle
Cruise Lake Argyle at sunset
Lake Argyle is about 75km from Kununurra, a 40-minute drive through the Carr Boyd Ranges. The 3.5-hour Sunset Magic cruise weaves between the islands past rock wallabies and crocodiles, and archer fish shoot water at your hand. Freshwater crocodiles live in the lake, so enjoy it from the boat and the lookouts along the dam wall.
