Things to do with kids in Rockhampton, Yeppoon & Capricorn

Rockhampton has two great free days out. The zoo in the Botanic Gardens has a chimpanzee troop and daily keeper talks, and Kershaw Gardens has one of the best playgrounds in Queensland, with a monorail, a double flying fox and a shallow water course. North of the city, the Capricorn Caves tour suits all ages, but book online as it often sells out.
On the coast at Yeppoon, the beachfront has a free, patrolled lagoon pool with a shallow kids' area, and the Keppel Kraken water play right beside it. At Causeway Lake you can hire kayaks and paddle boats, with fish and chips nearby.
For a bigger day, the ferry from Rosslyn Bay reaches Great Keppel Island in about half an hour. There are white beaches close to where the boat lands and good snorkelling around the island, but there isn't much to buy over there, so bring what you need.
139 family outings, waterfalls and walks across the region, sorted by drive time from Rockhampton. Choose your suburb at the top to sort from where you are staying.

Great Keppel Island
Snorkel off Great Keppel Island
Ferries cross from Rosslyn Bay to Great Keppel Island in about 30 minutes, and the island has 17 white sand beaches. Two beaches are close to where boats arrive, and the best snorkelling is at Shelving Beach, Monkey Point and Clam Bay. Supplies on the island are few, so bring what you need for the day.

Capricorn Caves
Go underground at Capricorn Caves
The caves sit in 80 acres of bushland about 23km north of Rockhampton. The 45-minute Cathedral Cave tour suits all ages and takes in the biggest caves and their special acoustics. Wear enclosed shoes and book online, as tours often sell out and tickets bought at the kiosk cost more.

Beside it, the Keppel Kraken water play has water cannons, jets and a giant umbrella bucket.
