Things to do with kids in Outback Queensland

Longreach has two museums that are worth the trip. At the Qantas Founders Museum, kids can walk along the wing of a jumbo jet and sit in the pilot's seat. At the Stockman's Hall of Fame, a virtual host leads you through outback life, and every area takes prams. Both keep shorter hours in summer, so check before you go.
This part of Queensland was once under an inland sea, and the fossils are everywhere. At Kronosaurus Korner in Richmond, you can see marine reptiles, then get a permit and go fossil hunting yourselves; you might find a fish or a shark tooth. In Hughenden, the Flinders Discovery Centre has a dig where kids dress up as fossil hunters.
In Winton, the Waltzing Matilda Centre tells the story of the song. The Combo Waterhole, said to have inspired it, is a walk best done in the cooler months. Summer days out here pass 40°C, so plan walks for early morning and carry plenty of water.
