Things to do with kids in Mackay

Set the alarm for Cape Hillsborough, about 45 minutes north of Mackay, where wallabies and kangaroos search the tide line for seed pods as the sun comes up. Please don't feed them. Afterwards, have breakfast at the picnic tables on the foreshore, and older kids can climb to Andrews Point for the view.
Up in the Eungella hills west of Mackay, there is a flat path at Broken River with platforms for spotting platypus and turtles. At Sky Window, a short circuit looks down the whole Pioneer Valley, and kids can stand inside a strangler fig arch further along the track. At Finch Hatton Gorge, a walk climbs to a lookout over the cascades, but the rocks are slippery, so hold hands.
Back in town, the Bluewater Trail is a long path for bikes and scooters, and it passes the free Bluewater Lagoon. The lagoon has fenced pools, water play and lifesavers in the warmer months. From Lamberts Lookout, you can watch for humpback whales in season.
