Things to do with kids in Townsville

The Strand is the heart of Townsville for families, a long palm-lined beachfront with playgrounds and a free water park full of slides and cannons. At its northern end, the Rockpool is a free seawater pool with a shallow area for little ones. In the city, Queensland Museum Tropics is free and has a shipwreck adventure built for young kids.
Ferries reach Magnetic Island in about 20 minutes. On the Forts Walk, there is a good chance of seeing a wild koala in the trees; go early, before the heat. Rock wallabies live among the boulders at Geoffrey Bay, and they come out around sunrise and sunset. There is no stinger net there, so wear a stinger suit in the warmer months.
South of town, kids can hand-feed a cassowary and hold a baby crocodile at Billabong Sanctuary. At Riverway Lagoons, there are shady pools by the river with lifeguards, and older kids can climb Castle Hill early in the morning for a view over the city.

Forts Walk
Look for wild koalas on the Forts Walk
This 4km walk takes about two hours, climbing through open woodland to World War II forts and wide ocean views. There's a good chance of spotting a wild koala low in the trees; stay back and never touch or feed them. Go early, when it's cooler and wildlife is more active, as the loop at the top is steep with many steps.

Geoffrey Bay
Spot rock wallabies at Geoffrey Bay
Allied rock wallabies live among the boulders at Geoffrey Bay in Arcadia and are often seen around sunrise and sunset. A self-guided snorkel trail leads out to the Moltke wreck; pick up a trail card from a nearby shop first. There's no stinger net here, so wear a full-body suit in stinger season, 1 November to 31 May.
