Things to do with kids in Flinders Ranges & Outback SA

Port Augusta is the gateway, and the free Arid Lands Botanic Garden on the edge of town has a children's garden to explore. In Quorn, the Pichi Richi Railway runs a heritage train through the ranges on set days, so book ahead.
At Wilpena Pound, the walk to Hills Homestead takes about two hours return and leads inside the pound to an old farmhouse. In the evening, drive up to Stokes Hill for the sunset. Further south, the walk through the Narrows in Alligator Gorge is short but steep, and kids love squeezing between the rock walls.
Coober Pedy is a long drive north, but kids love it. At Umoona and the Old Timers Mine, you walk through old opal workings and underground homes, and you can sift for opal. If you are going further into the outback with a 4WD, the warm spring at Dalhousie is a swim you won't forget.
