Things to do with kids in Armidale, Tamworth & New England

Sawn Rocks, in Mount Kaputar National Park, is a cliff of rock columns that look like giant organ pipes, left from the area's volcanic past. A shady 1.5km return track reaches the foot of the cliff in about 15 minutes each way. Go after midday for the best light, then use the free gas barbecues at the picnic area.

After heavy rain, Wollomombi Falls drops 220m into the gorge, and National Parks calls it the highest waterfall in NSW. An easy walk from the picnic area leads to a lookout above the falls and the gorge called the Inaccessible Gulf. Pack a picnic; there are barbecues under the red gums.

This easy 1.2km loop in Oxley Wild Rivers National Park passes waterfall lookouts above Apsley Gorge. Watch for brush-tailed rock wallabies on the cliffs and wedge-tailed eagles overhead. The falls are at their best after heavy rain, and the Apsley Falls picnic area is close by for lunch.

The Guy Fawkes River drops 100m over two waterfalls here, with four lookout platforms along the gorge. The 360m Upper Falls loop is accessible and suits young children. There are picnic tables and barbecues a short walk from the falls.

Bald Rock, near Tenterfield, is Australia's largest granite dome. The Bungoona walk is the family route to the top: 5.7km return, one to two hours, avoiding the steep climb up the rock face. Spring brings everlasting daisies and flannel flowers, and entry is $8 per vehicle a day, paid in cash at the self-registration point.

Copeton Dam, 35km south-west of Inverell, is one of the largest inland dams in NSW. Families swim, canoe, ski and fish for Murray cod from its boat ramps and foreshore. Drive or walk across the dam wall for views of the lake and mountains.

A short walk uphill from the Salt Caves picnic area leads to the Pilliga Forest Lookout Tower, once used to watch for bushfires. From the top you look across the forest canopy to the Warrumbungles on a clear day. The Pilliga Forest Discovery Centre in Baradine runs tours if you want a guide.

This 30-room Edwardian mansion on a former grazing property in Armidale is run by the National Trust, with farm buildings and gardens to explore. The house is seen by guided tour only, and the gardens open Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Allow at least two hours, and bring a picnic.

Drive to the top of White Street for almost 180-degree views over Tamworth and the Peel River valley. There are toilets, a picnic area and barbecues, and the gates are locked at night. The Kamilaroi Walking Track starts here and links to the Marsupial Park and the Botanic Garden, though some sections are challenging.
