This coast is long, so pick a base. In Coffs Harbour, start with a photo at the
Big Banana, which has a toboggan and a water park behind it. Walk the breakwall to
Muttonbird Island, and in the cooler months, watch for whales from the top. Up the range, the
Dorrigo Skywalk juts out over the rainforest.
Further north, Yamba has an
ocean pool in the rocks beside a patrolled beach. At Lennox Head,
Lake Ainsworth is a calm freshwater lake, stained amber by the tea trees, and good for a swim. In Byron Bay, you can walk short sections of the
Cape Byron track and look for dolphins on the way up to the lighthouse.
