Things to do with kids in Tasmania's East Coast

Freycinet is the heart of the East Coast. The climb to the Wineglass Bay lookout is steep but short, with seats along the way, and fit families can carry on down the stairs to the beach. For little ones, the boardwalk loop at Cape Tourville takes prams, and Honeymoon Bay is a sheltered spot to try snorkelling. You will need a parks pass.
Book the ferry from Triabunna to Maria Island, where there are no cars and the wombats wander around the old convict village. In Bicheno, East Coast Natureworld feeds its Tasmanian devils at 10am and 1pm. Just north of town, the Apsley Waterhole is a clear river pool for a summer swim.
Further north near St Helens, the granite boulders at Binalong Bay are coated in bright orange lichen. Inland, a short walk through tree ferns brings you to the foot of St Columba Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in Tasmania.

Binalong Bay
Find the orange rocks at Binalong Bay

St Columba Falls
Walk through tree ferns to St Columba Falls
A 15-minute walk through tall tree ferns leads to the foot of falls more than 90m high, among Tasmania's highest. The falls are 30 minutes' drive from St Helens via Pyengana. The walk back is uphill, and this is a wet area, so check the forecast.

Apsley Waterhole
Wade into the Apsley Waterhole
A gentle walk through open woodland reaches a clear pool in the Apsley River, good for a wade or swim in warm weather. Turn off the highway 3km north of Bicheno; the last 6km of Rosedale Road is unsealed and can flood. A parks pass is needed, and phone reception is limited.
