Things to do with kids in Geelong & the Bellarine

Geelong's waterfront is made for a family day. Eastern Beach is an old sea bath with a boardwalk, diving towers, a kids' pool and lifeguards in summer. A short walk along the water, kids can ride the hand-carved horses of the 1890s carousel. The Botanic Gardens next door are free and flat enough for prams.
On the Bellarine, Queenscliff is the place to go. The Bellarine Railway runs steam trains along Swan Bay on most Sundays, and the Maritime Museum lets kids try on an old diving helmet. On Sunday mornings, kids five and over can climb Point Lonsdale Lighthouse to look out over the Rip.
At low tide, the rock pools at Barwon Bluff in Barwon Heads are full of small sea creatures, and Ocean Grove has a patrolled surf beach in summer. North of Geelong, kangaroos and emus live at Serendip Sanctuary, at the foot of the You Yangs.
