Things to do with kids in Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road is long, so it works best with kids in short stops. In Torquay, the Surfing Museum is a good start. Lorne has a patrolled beach with lawns and barbecues right behind it, and Erskine Falls is just inland. At Kennett River, walk up the road and look into the trees, where wild koalas are often asleep in the branches.
Past Apollo Bay, Maits Rest is a short loop through rainforest that little legs can manage. Then come the Twelve Apostles, with lookouts a short walk from the car park. Go early or near sunset to avoid the crowds. Nearby, Loch Ard Gorge has a shipwreck story that older kids remember.
At the western end, Flagstaff Hill in Warrnambool is an old seaport village with a kids' trail and a sound and light show after dark. Emus and koalas live inside an old volcano at Tower Hill, and in Port Fairy, a causeway walk leads past wallabies to the lighthouse on Griffiths Island.
149 family outings, waterfalls and walks across the region, sorted by drive time from Torquay. Choose your suburb at the top to sort from where you are staying.

Top things to do in Great Ocean Road

The Twelve Apostles
See the Twelve Apostles
A short walk from the visitor area leads to clifftop lookouts over the limestone stacks. Middays are busiest, so come early or near sunset; at dusk you may spot little penguins on the beach far below. A new visitor centre is due to open in late 2026, bringing bookings and fees.

Loch Ard Gorge
Hear the shipwreck story at Loch Ard Gorge
Two teenagers, Tom and Eva, survived the 1878 wreck of the Loch Ard by reaching the beach in this gorge. The beach steps are closed because the ground is unstable, so take in the view from the lookouts. From October to April, shearwaters return to Mutton Bird Island at dusk.

Kennett River koala walk
Look for koalas at Kennett River
Wild koalas live in the trees around Kennett River, which has a walking path named after them. Have lunch in the little town, then walk the path with eyes on the branches. The 200m beach can have strong rips in bigger swells.

Maits Rest
Walk the rainforest at Maits Rest
Maits Rest is an 800m rainforest circuit about 15 minutes west of Apollo Bay. Ferns, mossy logs and a myrtle beech thought to be over 300 years old line the track. It's short and easy, so little legs can manage it.

Erskine Falls
Count the steps at Erskine Falls
Erskine Falls drops 30m into a fern-filled gorge, 5km inland from Lorne. The first lookout is a 300m return walk; the second goes down more than 300 steps to the base. The lower path gets slippery after rain, so wear good shoes.

Lorne Main Beach
Spend a beach day at Lorne
Lorne Main Beach curves around Louttit Bay, sheltered by Point Grey. Lifeguards patrol it in summer, and the calmer southern end is the safest part for swimming. Lawns, gum trees and barbecues sit right behind the sand.

Griffiths Island
Walk to the lighthouse on Griffiths Island
A short walk across the causeway from Port Fairy takes you onto Griffiths Island. Tracks wind past a small mob of swamp wallabies to an 1859 bluestone lighthouse. Shearwaters nest in burrows here from late September, so stay on the paths; dogs aren't allowed.
