Things to do with kids in Mount Gambier & the Limestone Coast

Mount Gambier is built on old volcanoes, which makes it a fun town to explore. Drive around the rim of the Blue Lake and stop at a few lookouts, then climb down the stairs into the Umpherston Sinkhole, a sunken garden full of hanging plants. Valley Lake, in another crater, has a playground and barbecues for lunch.
Just south of town, a short walk climbs to the crater rim at Mount Schank. Under the streets, Engelbrecht Cave has 30-minute guided tours, and you need to book. At Tantanoola, the caves are pink and brown and easy to walk through, even with a wheelchair.
Naracoorte is where the megafauna fossils are. The Wonambi Fossil Centre brings giant animals back to life, and the tour of Victoria Fossil Cave suits older kids. On the coast, stop for a photo with the Big Lobster at Kingston.

Walk Robe's coastal trail to the Obelisk
Robe's Obelisk was built in 1852 as a beacon for passing ships and a store for rocket lifesaving gear. The coastal trail gives the best view of it and links the lighthouse and old gaol ruins to the town centre. The whole trail can take a couple of hours, so pack water and walking shoes.
