Camping in the Great Ocean Road

99 campgrounds · 13 with powered sites · 2 with showers · 6 with a dump point · 14 with tent sites
The Great Ocean Road is one long drive past surf beaches, rainforest and limestone cliffs, from Torquay to Warrnambool and on towards Portland. It is too long for one weekend, so the best trips pick a stretch: the busy eastern end around Lorne and Apollo Bay, the Otways and the Twelve Apostles in the middle, or the whales and volcanoes of the west.

Where is the best place to camp in the Great Ocean Road?

The eastern end, from Torquay through Anglesea and Lorne to Apollo Bay, has the most choice and the most within walking distance, with foreshore parks such as Erskine River a few minutes from Lorne Beach. Past Apollo Bay, the road turns inland through the Otways and comes back to the coast at Port Campbell, where NRMA Port Campbell Holiday Park is the base for the Twelve Apostles. Further west, Warrnambool's parks, including Shipwreck Coast Holiday Park, are close to the beach.

What is there to do in the Great Ocean Road with kids?

At Torquay, the surfing museum is near the Back Beach, and The Great Ocean Road Story is in Lorne. Wild koalas are often seen along the road near Kennett River, and near Apollo Bay there is Wildlife Wonders. In Warrnambool, Flagstaff Hill is a maritime museum and village, and Tower Hill, about 15 km out, is an old volcanic crater that fills into a lake with islands after good rain. Out at Cape Bridgewater, a viewing platform looks over a fur seal colony of about 650 animals.

What are the best walks and waterfalls in the Great Ocean Road?

In the Otways, Maits Rest is a short rainforest walk among giant tree ferns, Melba Gully is known for glow worms after dark, and waterfalls such as Erskine Falls, Triplet Falls and Hopetoun Falls are in the forest behind the coast.
