Ballarat is a gold-rush city, and a camping trip here is really a trip back to the 1850s. Before dawn on 3 December 1854, government troops stormed the miners' stockade at Eureka, and within a year the diggers had won the vote and the gold licence was gone. The forests around the city still hold the old diggings.
Where is the best place to camp in Ballarat?
Staying in town keeps you close to Sovereign Hill. BIG4 Ballarat Goldfield Holiday Park at Golden Point is a short walk from Sovereign Hill and the Gold Museum, so you can walk back after the evening show. For bush camping, the state forests are close: Enfield State Park, about 25 km south, has camping at Surface Point, and the forest around Raglan to the west has a run of small camps near its waterfalls.
What is there to do in Ballarat with kids?
Sovereign Hill is the big one: a recreated 1850s gold-rush town on 25 hectares, with more than 60 buildings and staff in costume, and an evening sound-and-light show that tells the Eureka story. The Gold Museum is close by, and the Eureka Stockade Memorial Park marks the site of the battle. Around town there is the Ballarat Wildlife Park, the observatory, and by Lake Wendouree, the tramway museum.

What are the best walks and waterfalls in Ballarat?
Enfield State Park covers 4,400 hectares of old mining and timber forest, worked from the 1850s to the 1960s, and its old diggings are still there to explore on foot. West of Ballarat, Raglan Falls and Fern Tree Falls are in the forest near the Raglan camps, and Lal Lal Falls is also within reach.
