Camping on the Mornington Peninsula

36 campgrounds · 2 with powered sites · 2 with showers · 2 with a dump point · 4 with tent sites
The Mornington Peninsula has three coasts, and they suit different trips: the calm Port Phillip Bay side, the surf beaches of Western Port, and the rugged ocean coast of the national park, with cliffs, rock pools and dunes. The peninsula has about 190 km of coastline, and Arthurs Seat, at 305 metres, is its highest point.

Where is the best place to camp on the Mornington Peninsula?

On the bay side, Rosebud's foreshore camping runs from the last weekend in October to the last weekend in April, in numbered sections such as Section 9, and there are plenty of holiday parks behind the beaches at Dromana, Safety Beach and Blairgowrie. On the Western Port side, Point Leo Foreshore Reserve has powered sites and showers next to the surf beach. In the national park, Greens Bush - Highfield Campground is in the peninsula's largest remaining patch of bush, near Cape Schanck.

What is there to do on the Mornington Peninsula with kids?

On the bay side, Rosebud and Safety Beach have sandy beaches with shallow water, the Yawa Aquatic Centre is in Rosebud, and McCrae Homestead is nearby. Near Fingal, Peninsula Hot Springs is a short drive from the Rye and Rosebud parks. Towards Frankston, Moonlit Sanctuary at Pearcedale is close to the northern parks.

What are the best walks and waterfalls on the Mornington Peninsula?

In the national park, the Coppins Track is a 3 km return walk from Sorrento Ocean Beach, whose rock pools suit families, and Cape Schanck Lighthouse has a boardwalk and picnic area. Greens Bush has plenty of kangaroos, and shearwaters pass along the coast from September to May. The Two Bays Walking Trail and the Mount Martha lookouts are on the bay side.

Is it safe to swim on the Mornington Peninsula?

The bay side is calmer for small children. The ocean beaches have rips, undertows and big swells, so swim only at the patrolled ones, such as Portsea, Sorrento and Gunnamatta in the summer holidays, between the flags. Point Leo is a surf beach, so conditions there are more exposed than around Rosebud.

Do you need to book campsites on the Mornington Peninsula?

For summer, yes: Rosebud's population doubles when the campers arrive. Rosebud and McCrae foreshore camping is run by the Mornington Peninsula Shire, and dogs aren't allowed anywhere in the national park.

Are there powered sites on the Mornington Peninsula?

Yes. 2 campgrounds here have powered sites confirmed: Point Leo Foreshore Reserve and Stony Point Caravan Park. For the rest we are still confirming, so check with the park or holiday park before you book a powered site.

How far is Rosebud from Melbourne?

Rosebud, Safety Beach and Capel Sound are about 56 to 61 km south of central Melbourne, Point Leo about 67 km, and the national park about 90 km.
