Camping in Gippsland

104 campgrounds · 4 with powered sites · 2 with a dump point · 4 with tent sites
Gippsland is big enough to be four different trips: the granite bays of Wilsons Promontory, the long, empty sand of the Ninety Mile Beach, the old gold town of Walhalla in the mountains, and the rainforest gullies of the Strzelecki Ranges. The Prom alone, about 157 km from Melbourne, is the southernmost national park on the mainland.

Where is the best place to camp in Gippsland?

For Wilsons Promontory, Tidal River inside the park is where the main walks start, and outside the park there is bush camping at Bear Gully near Tarwin Lower. Along the Ninety Mile Beach, 151 km of unbroken sand with the Gippsland Lakes behind the dunes, the camps at Golden Beach, Seaspray and Loch Sport sit a short walk from the sand. Inland, Rawson Caravan Park is the base for Walhalla and Baw Baw, and near Heyfield, Montana on the Macalister is close to Lake Glenmaggie, used for waterskiing and boating.

What is there to do in Gippsland with kids?

Up at Walhalla, a gold town founded in 1862 that once had around 4,000 people, the gold mine tour and the Walhalla Goldfields Railway are close to the camps, and a 7.7 km rail trail follows the old line to Erica. In the Latrobe Valley, Powerworks is in Morwell, and at Korumburra, Coal Creek is a heritage park and museum. On the Baw Baw plateau, the snow-gum forest is the only known home of the critically endangered Baw Baw frog.
