Murray East is a small region centred on Wodonga and Lake Hume. Wodonga sits on the Victorian side of the Murray, opposite its twin city Albury, and Lake Hume, formed by the Hume Dam built between 1919 and 1936, now covers about 20,000 hectares of water for boating, fishing and bike riding along its shore.
The choice is between the lake and the town. Discovery Parks Lake Hume at Ebden is the one for the water and the rail trail, while Wodonga Holiday Park is in town, at the junction of the Hume and Murray Valley highways, which makes it an easy overnight stop between Melbourne and Sydney.
Lake Hume is used for fishing, water skiing and boating, and you can drive across the dam wall. Near the lake, The Bonegilla Migrant Experience is at Bonegilla, and the Army Museum Bandiana is at Bandiana. In town there is the WAVES pool, and across the river in Albury, the Murray Art Museum.
The High Country Rail Trail runs 80 km from Wodonga along the edge of the lake, and the 8 km stretch from Tallangatta to Old Tallangatta is sealed, which suits younger riders. Around Wodonga there are lookouts such as Huon Hill and Kurrajong Gap.
None of the campgrounds here have powered sites confirmed yet. That usually means nobody has confirmed it, not that there are none, so check with the park or holiday park before you book.
Wodonga is about 324 km north-east of Melbourne, on the Hume Highway.
