Things to do with kids in Fremantle & Perth's Western Suburbs

The ferry to Rottnest Island is one of the best days out in Perth. Hire bikes, look for quokkas (but don't touch or feed them), and let the kids try snorkelling at The Basin, a calm reef close to the settlement. Back on the mainland, Cottesloe Beach has a swimming enclosure from about the end of October and lifesavers on summer weekends.
Fremantle has a lot for kids, and much of it is free. Kids get into the Maritime Museum free, and tours of the submarine HMAS Ovens leave every half hour. The Shipwrecks Museum is free too. Older kids find the tour of Fremantle Prison fascinating, but there are lots of stairs.
Down at Coogee, a snorkel trail starts at an old shipwreck just 25 metres from the beach on the Coogee Maritime Trail. At Bibra Lake, the regional playground has a double flying fox and a pit where kids dig for a Diprotodon fossil. Adventure World is next door, but it closes in wet weather.
121 family outings, waterfalls and walks across the region, sorted by drive time from Fremantle. Choose your suburb at the top to sort from where you are staying.

Top things to do in Fremantle & the West

Rottnest Island
Look for quokkas on Rottnest
Wadjemup / Rottnest Island has the world's largest quokka population, most active early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Watch them from a distance; don't touch or feed them. Hire bikes from the ferry companies or Pedal & Flipper, or ride the Island Explorer bus with its 19 stops.

The Basin
Learn to snorkel at The Basin
This hollowed-out reef is a 10-minute walk or short bike ride from the main settlement. When the wind blows from the south-east, south or south-west, the water is calm and protected for kids learning to snorkel. Showers, barbecues, drinking water and toilets are by the beach.

Fremantle Prison
Step inside Fremantle Prison
Fremantle Prison is WA's only World Heritage listed building, and the Gatehouse visitor centre and Convict Depot are free to enter. The Convict Prison Tour leaves on the hour from 10am and takes 1 hour 15 minutes, with plenty of stairs. A family pass was $73 in October 2026, and the True Crime Tour isn't recommended for under-10s.

Surf lifesavers patrol Cottesloe Beach on weekends and public holidays from October to April. Around the end of October, a swimming enclosure goes in off the groyne, reaching 170m along the beach and 140m out. Trains on the Fremantle line stop at Cottesloe station.
