Things to do with kids in Strahan & Tasmania's West Coast

Strahan is the base for the West Coast. A day cruise on Macquarie Harbour stops at the convict ruins on Sarah Island and a rainforest boardwalk, so bring rain gear. Back in town, the walk to Hogarth Falls starts in a park with free barbecues, and you might see a platypus in the creek.
North of Strahan, kids can hire a toboggan in town and slide down the Henty Dunes. There are no toilets or water there, so bring your own. Near Zeehan, take a torch through the old railway Spray Tunnel and look for glow-worms on the ceiling.
In Queenstown, the West Coast Wilderness Railway runs steam trains, and the short Lynchford trip includes gold panning. Book weeks ahead if you can. On the way east, the flat boardwalk to Nelson Falls takes about 20 minutes and suits all ages.

Sarah Island
Cruise to the convict ruins on Sarah Island
Cruises leave Strahan every day and stop at Sarah Island, Tasmania's oldest convict settlement, for a guided walk among the ruins. Most also stop at Heritage Landing for a rainforest boardwalk past an ancient Huon pine. Bring wet-weather gear; one operator's 9am cruise returns about 3pm and includes lunch.

Montezuma Falls
Cross the bridge at Montezuma Falls
This 11.5km return walk follows an old tramway through rainforest to the 104m falls; allow about three hours. The viewing platform is closed, but the suspension bridge is open for views of the falls. Mining has polluted some creeks, so use the bridges and don't drink from or swim in them.
