The Riverland is a string of Murray River towns a couple of hours north-east of Adelaide, among orchards, vineyards and red river cliffs. Renmark's orchards began with the Chaffey brothers' irrigation scheme in 1887, and the river is still the heart of every trip: swimming, paddling, fishing and paddle steamers.
Each town has its own caravan park, so you can pick a town by what you want to do. Barmera has Discovery Holiday Park on Lake Bonney, Renmark and Berri have parks by the river, and Loxton Caravan and Camping Park is the base for Katarapko, a section of Murray River National Park with around 55 bush campsites. Downstream, Morgan Riverside Caravan Park is where the river turns from flowing west to flowing south.
At Barmera, Lake Bonney has sandy beaches, a jetty, fishing and sailing. In Renmark, the paddle steamer PS Industry is moored on the river, and the Renmark Paringa Community Museum is close to the Paringa park. In Waikerie, the silo art shows pelicans and frogs, and Morgan, once the second-busiest port in South Australia, has a ferry across the river and old port buildings to explore.
At Katarapko, the Kai Kai Nature Trail is 1.25 km and the Ngak Indau Wetland Trail is 3.2 km with a bird hide, and the creeks are good for canoeing. Near Kingston on Murray, Banrock Station's Ramsar-listed wetlands shelter southern bell frogs and regent parrots, and near Renmark, Cooltong Conservation Park is a bushwalking spot for mallee birds such as the malleefowl.
Yes. 5 campgrounds here have powered sites confirmed, including Echo Holiday Parks - Renmark, Echo Holiday Park and Morgan Riverside Caravan Park. For the rest we are still confirming, so check with the park or holiday park before you book a powered site.
