Things to do with kids in Perth

Start with Kings Park, where kids can build dams in a creek at Naturescape, then take the ferry across the river to Perth Zoo. The WA Museum is free for kids, so it's a good backup on a hot or wet day.
The best-known day trip is the ferry to Rottnest Island, with bikes, quokkas and calm reef to snorkel. To the north, Yanchep has koalas on a boardwalk and a crystal cave. In the hills, kids can hand-feed kangaroos at Caversham.
Perth's ocean beaches can be rough. With young kids, choose a sheltered spot such as the beach inside Hillarys Marina, the swimming enclosure at Cottesloe in summer, or Rockingham Beach to the south. Choose your part of Perth below for the places nearest you.
519 family outings, waterfalls and walks across the region, sorted by drive time from Perth. Choose your suburb at the top to sort from where you are staying.

Top things to do in Perth

Kings Park and Botanic Garden
Cross the treetops and build dams in Kings Park
Entry is free, and the Federation Walkway's glass and steel bridge crosses the Botanic Garden treetops on a 40-minute return walk. At Rio Tinto Naturescape, kids can take their shoes off and build a dam in Paperbark Creek. Naturescape is closed on Mondays, and from November it opens only 8.30am to 12.30pm.

Loch McNess and Wetlands Walk Trail
Meet the koalas at Yanchep
A raised boardwalk in Yanchep National Park lets you see koalas in the trees, 8am to 4.30pm daily. The flat 2.7km Wetlands Walk circles Loch McNess from McNess House, past a lookout over the water. Western grey kangaroos graze the lawns early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

Serpentine Falls
Get to Serpentine Falls early
An easy walk from the car park leads to the falls, which pour into a rock-lined pool after autumn and winter rain. Arrive before 10am, because the area often fills and closes to new visitors. Do not climb or jump from the falls; people have died doing this.
