Things to do with kids in Western Sydney, Penrith & the Hawkesbury

Western Sydney has two great animal parks, ten minutes apart. At Featherdale, kids hand-feed kangaroos and walk through a lorikeet aviary. Sydney Zoo has lions, hyenas and free parking, and you book an arrival time. Nearby, Nurragingy Reserve has five playgrounds, a water play park and a miniature railway once a month.
On hot days, Sydney Action Park at Prospect has slides for every age, but check the calendar for open days. In Penrith, the Great River Walk follows the Nepean between two bridges, with playgrounds and cafes along the way. The Museum of Fire has fire engines to climb aboard and rides on some days.
Out in the Hawkesbury, kids can churn butter and feed animals at the Australiana Pioneer Village on Sundays. Closer in, Rouse Hill Regional Park has an adventure playground and tracks for scooters.
111 family outings, waterfalls and walks across the region, sorted by drive time from Penrith. Choose your suburb at the top to sort from where you are staying.

Top things to do in Western Sydney

Featherdale Sydney Wildlife Park, Doonside
Hand-feed kangaroos at Featherdale
Kids can hand-feed wallabies and kangaroos in three walk-through habitats, then wander through the lorikeet aviary. Around 50 koalas live across six habitats, so even busy days give everyone a look. The park opens 8am to 5pm daily, and children under three get in free.
