Camping in Sydney

70 campgrounds Β· 8 with powered sites Β· 19 with showers Β· 3 with a dump point Β· 24 with tent sites
You can camp surprisingly close to the city in Sydney, from a harbour island to bush camps in the national parks that ring it. Royal National Park, declared in 1879, was Australia's first national park, and Ku-ring-gai Chase, declared in 1894, holds more than 800 Aboriginal sites, including rock engravings and cave drawings.

Where is the best place to camp in Sydney?

In the city itself, Cockatoo Island Waterfront Campground has power and showers, and there are tourist parks at Macquarie Park and North Narrabeen. For the bush, Royal National Park in the south has the Bonnie Vale campground, and Ku-ring-gai Chase in the north has The Basin Campground at Coasters Retreat. North-west along the Hawkesbury, Cattai Campground has showers, with simpler camps further up the river, and in the south-west, Bents Basin is out near Camden.

What is there to do in Sydney with kids?

At Cattai, the Hope Farm Mill, from around 1806, is believed to be the oldest industrial site in Australia. Along the Hawkesbury, convicts built the Great North Road between 1827 and 1832, ferries still carry cars across the river at Wisemans Ferry, and Cobham Hall Museum is in town. Near Emu Plains and Penrith, the Museum of Fire is close by, and by the harbour, Woolwich Dock and Parklands is at Woolwich, with the Woolwich Baths nearby.

What are the best walks and waterfalls in Sydney?

In Royal National Park, Wattamolla has a lagoon with a waterfall running into it, and Lady Carrington Drive is a flatter 10 km track along the Hacking River that suits families; platypus were brought back to the park in 2023. Uloola Falls has its own walk-in camp. In Ku-ring-gai Chase, West Head lookout looks over Barrenjoey and Palm Beach, and the Great North Walk passes through rainforest to Jerusalem Bay from Cowan station.

Is it safe to swim in Sydney?

Take care in the rock pools. In Royal National Park, blue-lined octopuses live in the rock pools and are highly venomous, so look but don't touch. The parks can close on days of extreme fire danger, so check NSW National Parks before you go.

Are there powered sites in Sydney?

Yes. 8 campgrounds here have powered sites confirmed, including Lane Cove River Tourist Park, BIG4 Holiday Parks and Cookatoo Island Waterfront Campground. For the rest we are still confirming, so check with the park or holiday park before you book a powered site.

How far are the bush campgrounds from Sydney's city centre?

Cattai National Park is about 55 km north-west of the city, Wisemans Ferry about 75 km, and Appin, near the south-west camps, about 75 km. Royal National Park is right on the southern edge of Sydney, near Waterfall, Otford and Loftus.
