Camping in Capital Country

49 campgrounds · 2 with powered sites · 9 with showers · 1 with a dump point · 18 with tent sites
Capital Country wraps around Canberra and Goulburn, from the gullies of the Southern Highlands to the wilderness behind Braidwood. Goulburn, about 195 km south-west of Sydney, was proclaimed Australia's first inland city in 1863, and the Big Merino still marks its past as a wool town.

Where is the best place to camp in Capital Country?

For waterfalls and cool forest, the Southern Highlands around Bundanoon, whose name means 'place of deep gullies', sit on the edge of Morton National Park, and Gambells Rest Campground has showers and barbecues. For caves, the Wombeyan Caves camp is right beside the caves, about 77 km north of Goulburn. For wilderness, Braidwood, about 55 km east of Canberra, is the town for the Budawang and Deua parks, where the camps are simple bush sites. Closer to Canberra, the Brindabella foothills around Uriarra have small camps along the Murrumbidgee.

What is there to do in Capital Country with kids?

At Wombeyan, the camp has a kiosk and kitchen, the kangaroo mobs are used to visitors, caving groups run permitted trips into the marble caves, and Aboriginal tool-making in the reserve goes back 6,000 to 14,000 years. In Goulburn, the Rail Heritage Centre and the Historic Waterworks Museum are close to town. In the Highlands, Bowral has the Bradman Museum, and Berrima has Harper's Mansion.
