Camping on the Murray

This is the NSW side of the Murray, Australia's longest river at 2,508 km, which forms the border with Victoria for much of its length. It is a long run of river towns from Albury to Wentworth, and most of the campgrounds are small bush camps on the river bends, with sandy beaches and red gums.

Where is the best place to camp on the Murray?

The biggest cluster of river camps is around Mathoura and Moama, with camps such as Swifts Creek, and there are similar river-beach camps near Barooga. For showers and power, Moama has Discovery Parks - Horseshoe Lagoon, close to Echuca, and there are town parks at Tocumwal, Mulwala, Corowa, Albury, Barham, Balranald and Wentworth. Out west, Mungo National Park's Main Campground is about 110 km from Wentworth.

What is there to do on the Murray with kids?

Near Moama, Echuca's Port of Echuca Discovery Centre is a short drive away, and in Mulwala, the Pioneer Museum is near the holiday park. At Corowa, the 1893 Corowa Conference was an early step towards Federation. At Wentworth, the Old Wentworth Gaol is in town, and a viewing tower looks over the meeting of the Murray and the Darling. In Balranald, the Old Balranald Gaol is near the caravan park.

What is there to see at Mungo and along the river?

At Mungo, the Main Campground is the closest camp for watching sunset over the Walls of China, and there is the Mungo Lookout. Near Albury, Lake Hume is a big dam on the river about 16 km east of the city.

Do you need to book campsites on the Murray?

Mungo's Main Campground must be booked in advance through NSW National Parks. Many of the river camps are simple, with no showers or power, so check each campground's facilities first.

Are there powered sites on the Murray?

Yes. 11 campgrounds here have powered sites confirmed, including Balranald Caravan Park, BIG4 NRMA Yarrawonga Mulwala Holiday Park and Buronga Riverside Tourist Park. For the rest we are still confirming, so check with the park or holiday park before you book a powered site.

How far is Mungo National Park from Wentworth?

Mungo's Main Campground is about 110 km from Wentworth. Upstream, Lake Hume is about 16 km east of Albury-Wodonga.
