Camping in the Blue Mountains

46 campgrounds · 4 with powered sites · 5 with showers · 3 with a dump point · 13 with tent sites
The Blue Mountains are close enough to Sydney for a Friday-night start, and they reward it: a sandstone plateau about 70 km west of the city, cut by gorges up to 760 metres deep, with lookouts, waterfalls and caves around every bend. Katoomba, the main town, sits at 1,017 metres.

Where is the best place to camp in the Blue Mountains?

It depends on the weekend you want. Up on the ridge around Katoomba and Blackheath you are in town, close to the lookouts, shops and a pool, and Blackheath Glen Tourist Park has powered and tent sites with showers. Below the cliffs, the Megalong Valley has bush camping, and closer to Sydney, Euroka near Glenbrook is a national park campground for tents. Further out, the Capertee Valley, about 30 km across and claimed to be the widest canyon in the world, has Glen Davis on the edge of Wollemi National Park, and to the south-west, Oberon is the base for Jenolan Caves.

What is there to do in the Blue Mountains with kids?

On the ridge, the Three Sisters walk from Echo Point to Oreades Lookout is half a kilometre return and manages a pram with a helping hand, while the Giant Stairway heads down the cliff into the Jamison Valley for older legs. Out towards Lithgow, the Small Arms Factory Museum, the State Mine Heritage Park and Eskbank House make a day of history, and the Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway is near Oberon. On a wet afternoon, Kids Kingdom in Katoomba covers it.

What are the best walks and waterfalls in the Blue Mountains?

Jenolan Caves has 11 show caves open for guided tours all year, each one to two hours, with options for different ages and fitness, and Lucas Cave's Cathedral Chamber is more than 50 metres high. Around Katoomba, Katoomba Falls, the Leura Cascades and Wentworth Falls each have their own walks, and Govetts Leap Falls drops off the cliff at Blackheath. North of Lithgow, the Glow Worm Tunnel walk is 6 km return; keep torches off and voices down inside, because the glow worms are sensitive to noise.

When is the best time to go camping in the Blue Mountains?

Any season has something, but plan around two things. Oberon sits high enough that it usually gets snow in winter, so pack for cold nights. From 1 October to late March, a bush fire danger period is declared, and National Parks can close tracks, parks and lookouts at short notice on high fire danger days, so check the park alerts before you go.

Do you need to book campsites in the Blue Mountains?

Yes for the national park campgrounds. Bookings for NPWS campgrounds in Blue Mountains National Park, including Euroka, are made online or by phone through the National Parks Contact Centre, and sites book out fast in school holidays and on long weekends.

Are there powered sites in the Blue Mountains?

Yes. 4 campgrounds here have powered sites confirmed, including Blackheath Glen Tourist Park, Katoomba Falls Tourist Park and Jenolan Caravan Park. For the rest we are still confirming, so check with the park or holiday park before you book a powered site.

How far are the Blue Mountains from Sydney?

Katoomba is 102 km west of Sydney's CBD, and the national park begins about 70 km from the city, so Glenbrook and the lower mountains are closer still. Newnes and the Glow Worm Tunnel are further, about 200 km north-west of Sydney.
