Things to do with kids in Yarra Valley & the Dandenong Ranges

Puffing Billy is the classic day out from Melbourne. The steam train runs through fern gullies from Belgrave, and kids four and over can sit on the window sills with their legs dangling over the side. You need to book.
In the Dandenongs, older kids can climb the 1000 Steps, and the gentler Ramblers Track suits little ones. Get there early on weekends, because the car park fills by 10am. Listen for lyrebirds on the walk to Sherbrooke Falls, and at SkyHigh, kids can climb the Giant's Chair and try the maze, with views over the city.
Kids get into Healesville Sanctuary free on weekends and in the school holidays, and the bird show and the platypus are the highlights. Out at Warburton, the Redwood Forest feels like another country, and in the warmer months Warburton Water World has free water jets and a giant slide.
97 family outings, waterfalls and walks across the region, sorted by drive time from Lilydale. Choose your suburb at the top to sort from where you are staying.

Puffing Billy Railway
Dangle your legs from Puffing Billy
Puffing Billy's steam trains run every day from Belgrave to Lakeside, through fern gullies and tall mountain ash. Kids aged 4 and over can sit on the carriage sills, legs over the side, with an adult within arm's reach. Pre-booking is essential, and longer trips to Gembrook run Friday to Sunday.

Officially the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk, this steep path climbs through rainforest beside a creek to views of Melbourne. Return on the Lyrebird Track to make a loop, or take the gentler Ramblers Track with little ones. The car park fills by 10am on most weekend mornings, and Upper Ferntree Gully station is a 1.2km stroll away.

Sherbrooke Falls
Listen for lyrebirds on the way to Sherbrooke Falls
Signposted tracks from two picnic grounds in Sherbrooke Forest lead through mountain ash and tree ferns to the falls. The falls are small and partly hidden by ferns, so come after rain, when the water is flowing and lyrebirds are about. The park closes on Extreme Fire Danger days.
